Ellur shares confessional EP ‘God Help Me Now’
Ellur’s latest offering is immersive, introspective and infectious.
Following a busy 2024 that included the release of five singles and several shows and festival slots, Halifax indie-pop riser Ellur has made sure to get the new year off to an equally exciting start with the release of her brand-new EP God Help Me Now.
Showcasing her infectious indie-pop sensibilities through a commanding collection of tracks, Ellur’s latest EP is easily her most comprehensive project to date. Title track God Help Me Now opens with stripped-back instrumentation and hushed vocals that are so magnetically sombre, you can’t help but wallow in them, before building to the song’s soaring climax which easily establishes the compelling artist as a strong creative force to be reckoned with.
Quickly following with its disorientating intro, Your Dog then envelops us in its staggering guitar tones and warm acoustic soundscape. An incredibly vivid and heart-wrenchingly honest exploration of past relationships, Ellur’s song-writing skills shine brightly on this track; her expressive metaphors act as a testament to her ability to tell entirely captivating personal stories in an entirely relatable way.
The slightly more upbeat Yellow Light then brings a lighter atmosphere to the EP. Its percussive beat and infectious chorus perfectly blend with influences from the likes of Sam Fender to create a humble anthemic showstopper, before Ellur can bring her final offering to the table in the shape of Mourning Song.
With swooning vocals that are reminiscent of Lizzie McAlpine and Phoebe Bridgers, this quiet, acoustic closer takes the EP to its final resting place. Delicate and dreamy with its emotive instrumentation and heart-on-her-sleeve vulnerability, it seems to represent everything Ellur hoped to achieve with this project – sharing her most personal feelings with those who frequently feel the same.
