After five years in the making, Bristol Beacon officially reopened its doors to the public on the 30th of November. This unveil included the brand-new Beacon Hall, alongside reimagined spaces throughout the iconic venue.

A Trip The Light Fantastic performance was commissioned to celebrate the venue’s reopening, and it was the perfect fit. Conducted by Charles Hazlewood, Trip The Light Fantastic was an immersive amalgamation of orchestral group Paraorchestra and electronic composer Surgeon Girls, brought to life by light artists Limbic Cinema.

The atmosphere at Bristol Beacon was remarkable, it seemed the venue was vibrating with sheer joy. People from all backgrounds and walks of life were brought together by one unanimous goal: to celebrate the city and the arts.

Trip The Light Fantastic began in darkness. Lone orchestral members emerged within the audience, producing long, poignant notes under the illumination of ethereal white lights.

As the performance progressed, Surgeon Girls’ experimental, electronic sound provided a satisfying juxtaposition to the traditional sound of Paraorchestra. These two distinct, contrasting styles frequently entwined to create a musical experience like no other.

This collaboration between old and new felt fitting for the Beacon’s reopening: combining the venue’s legacy with its commitment towards creating a sustainable, inclusive space for everyone.

Throughout the performance, the lights of Limbic Cinema embraced the unique design of Beacon Hall, creating a visual landscape that was nothing short of magical.

Coming to a close with a multi-genre, rainbow climax, it’s fair to say that Trip The Light Fantastic was more than just a performance. It was an unforgettable experience.

As the new year draws closer, I look forward to see how Bristol Beacon thrives in 2024.
