With her debut album, Defamator, due in May, Chloe shares the second taster in the form of the slow, soul-baring God Is Dead. The track tells a tale most are all too familar with; being pursued by someone older when you’re far too young and not being able to escape from the situation. The line “I was a child, he was a man / I hope to God we never meet again” sums it up in a powerful way, while taking hold of the narrative.

While this is only the second track released from the album so far, it shows a brutually honest and cathartic display that we can expect more of on the album. Despite tackling heavy subject matter, the album is a much welcome display of vulnerabilty and openness that joins fellow ‘sad girls’ Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in touching on important subjects. Being vulnerable is always commendable, especially in such a public setting.

On the track, Chloe importantly notes: “This is the one song I’d like to stay relatively private about. It is a really personal song to me, so much so that I don’t think I may ever be able to perform it live.” Understandly, we may not hear this one live, but at least we have the journal-entry-esque lyrics to hold on to.

Defamator is out on May 12th via Taxi Gauche Records.
