It’s been a long career for glow in the dark flowers. The band’s members Jessee Crane and Philip Lesicko began their musical careers in Illinois in the 2000s, playing in Chicago and beyond. Previously known as The Funs, their albums left an impact on the punk and post-punk scene of Chicago and beyond. They would later go on to create their own label — Manic Static — and make a studio out of an abandoned funeral home. Flash forward to today and the duo has a new name, new ambitions, and a new album on the way.

The first studio album released under glow in the dark flowers will see the band at their most mature while maintaining a semblance of their previous soundscape from The Funs. Proceeded by EP refuseniks at the museum (a piece of musical improvisation in tandem with the project of the same name by Lise Haller Baggesen), their debut album will center around their drive for collective creativity as a pair. It is as experimental as it can be within the constraints of their minds, which stretches to new territories. Expanding on their previous sounds — at least to the band — means not forgoing their fuzz and the lo-fi adjacent soundscapes that built their musical foundation.

ON THE MARBLE begins with a stripped-back guitar melody and alluring vocals: the draw is immediate. Percussion adds on with a sound that appears to draw its roots from the 90s grunge, doing so while complimenting the vocals of Crane in a delightful manner. Throw on some experimental tones and brighter sonics, and it’s a wonderful song. It is evident throughout ON THE MARBLE that glow in the dark flowers knows how to execute their mission of making their previous sounds modernized yet unique to themselves. If this is the first offering, it’s only right to be curious about what the rest of their album holds.

glow in the dark flowers will be released on April 28th via Born Yesterday Records.
