Australian singer-songwriter Al Matcott shares his very first single Mediocre, part of his upcoming debut EP titled ‘You Can Be Anyone’, which is set for an August 6th release via Skip Hero Records.

Previously having a wealth of experience within the Melbourne music circuit — particularly with bands Euphoriacs, Honey Badgers and Buried FeatherMatcott is taking his first exciting steps into solo work.

The single has a soft and pleasant aura to it that makes one think of summer days in their childhood; when nothing was more important than having fun. This is in strong juxtaposition to its lyrics, which explores people who never hold themselves responsible for anything; perfectly summed up in the blunt chorus line “Why would you choose to be such a mediocre person?”. This contrast works incredibly well and results in somehow resembling both a Nashville tragedy and an early 90s indie rock song.

Commenting on the single himself, Matcott said “Mediocre is for cruising on a skateboard at sunset but also it’s a kiss-off to self-important and self-indulgent people. Brendan and I recorded it at my Mum’s house in Castlemaine and we managed to find a slick groove pretty quickly.”

Matcott has previously played in a number of Melbourne-based bands and now finds himself venturing out by himself. Commenting on this change up and what it means, Matcott says, “They’re all my stories, I don’t want to hide them behind anything”. If that’s true and, going off this single, then Al Matcott is going to be telling us some more great stories in the future.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Australia on 25th June then catch Al’s Mediocre single launch show at The Old Bar, Melbourne.
