Balancing Act hit all the right notes on ‘She Plays The Theremin’

Insanely catchy and immensely repeatable, the band’s first release of 2024 shows real promise for the alt-rock group.

When Balancing Act announced the release of their latest single She Plays The Theremin, fans only had one thing to say: what’s a theremin? A perfectly valid question given the electronic instrument only tends to be known by a specific subset of music obsessives. Yet, unlike the obscurity of its niche namesake, She Plays The Theremin is set to become one of Balancing Act’s best-known songs – all thanks to its insane catchiness and immense repeatability.

Easily ranking amongst their best tracks, the alt-rock band maintain their strong identity on the single, with their uniquely dark soundscape and irresistible hooks, all the while embracing a growing sense of sonic grandeur that is admittedly admirable from a band who are clearly still just having fun with their music.

The song’s lyrics are incredibly screamable, vivid and an impressive example of storytelling from the four-piece: “She’s a proper pied piper / With Vivienne up to her thighs / She tiptoes and pirouettes all through my mind.” Meanwhile, the earworm chorus, pulsing rhythm and swinging riffs are set to guarantee that this track will be a real crowd pleaser live.

Balancing Act are continuing to smash stereotypes of indie-rock conventionalism with their slick sound, charisma and style, and have already made clear they will release some proper gems in 2024.
