The singer-songwriter turns negative memories into something positive in his latest guitar-driven track.

Despite having already shared the stage with Scottish indie giants Kyle Falconer, Rianne Downey and Calum Bowie, Scottish singer-songwriter Ben Walker has only just released his fourth single Just a Boy. And, as usual, it’s a well-crafted, memorable track that not only features tight beats and expressive vocal delivery, but also gets stuck in your head as soon as you press play.

With the track’s initial inspiration dating back to his school years, which Walker describes as ‘a false start’ due to being bullied through half of his school career, Just a Boy touches on the important themes of self-esteem and coping with negative past experiences. And as a result is dominated by a raw emotion that is both heard and felt throughout the song due to Walker’s captivating vocals – which truly show that songs like these, that clearly mean so much to Walker, are where his expressive vocals really come into their element.

Yet, even though this impressive vocal delivery takes centre stage throughout the track, Just a Boy is still a stunningly crafted song that deserves attention for its sonic sophistication. Featuring catchy hooks, a driving beat and an irresistible bridge, Walker comfortably displays influences from the likes of Jake Bugg with his folky earworm tune, whilst continuing to show that he has a deep understanding of the authenticity that is required to create a memorable and flourishing sound.

Having been written during a sit down at the kitchen table with his Mum, it feels only right that Just a Boy would be the outcome of this time. And maybe that’s why the song feels so honest, warm and familiar, and could easily be played over and over again.
