If you don’t know the name Daryl Johns, there’s a good chance you’ve heard him anyway. He’s part of Mac DeMarco’s band, performed and recorded with Pat Metheny, The Lemon Twigs and Macy Gray – and now he’s putting out his own album. The lead single, I’m So Serious, is a self-professed love letter to the early 1980s; a time of burgers, shakes and catchy TV jingles.

The track is about as ‘80s homage as it’s possible to be; a slice of bubble-gum pop-rock with melodies wrapped in neon and vocals spat out by a stylophone. The chorus is catchy, the accompanying video silly; it all oozes AOR acts like The Outfield and Starship. I’m So Serious is unlike anything Johns has put out before, but deliciously, gluttonously nostalgic.

The debut album, Daryl Johns, is out November 22nd via Mac’s Record Label.
