Eleanor and the Dream truly lives up to her name with Used To, in which the combination of the gentle melody and soft vocals seem to lull me further into a liminal space between sleep and consciousness with each listen.

This is the second single from London-based singer-songwriter Eleanor Neish-Melling, who released the melancholic I Don’t Need Somebody To Love Me in February of this year.

Both songs cover the topic of heartbreak in a reflective, almost detached manner, as though she mulled over the subject matter many times before putting pen to paper. However, where her first single encapsulates a somewhat defensive attitude towards a former relationship, Used To provides a more vulnerable perspective, the first verse consisting of a plea to her former lover to save the relationship. The second verse presents the evolution of her grief by illustrating her reluctant acceptance of the situation, with lyrics such as “When there’s nothing to ignite anymore / We’re just dying ashes on the floor” showcasing her wistfulness through evocative imagery.

Whether you’re looking for a soothing track to lower your stress levels on your drive home from work, you need a little lullaby to tip you over the verge of dozing into a deep sleep, or you’re just in need of something to have a little cry to at the end of a difficult day, this dreamy track will definitely have something to offer you.

Having established her sound as soothing melodies with poignant, thoughtful lyrics, Eleanor and the Dream should feature regularly in everybody’s Spotify libraries as we enter the bustling chaos of post-pandemic normality.
