Since forming in 2019, alt-rock band Everything After Midnight have released their debut EP, earned support slots with The Lounge Society, Do Nothing, Circa Waves and LIFE, and have also received frequent radio play from BBC Introducing host Jericho Keys. Now having released their latest single, I guess,, the female fronted five-piece have proven that more good things should be on the horizon as their catchy, intriguing, and lyrically strong track is a proper tune.

Brimming with attitude and pessimistic lyrics, I guess, really showcases the strength of EAM’s songwriting. Their lyrics read like poetry while the vocals give off an air of annoyance and hurt, which combines to clearly portray the song’s fatalistic approach to modern dating in an intelligent way: “Don’t kiss me ‘cos you’re bored / Don’t kiss me ‘cos you love me / Kiss me ‘cos I’m a numb, cold, hotel lobby / My body is reserved, for strangers only / Don’t kiss me ‘cos you’re bored / Don’t kiss me ‘cos you love me”.

It is evident that EAM know exactly how to write a good tune and really know how to present the emotions that are at the core of their songs in an interesting and impactful way. With energetic hooks, rhythmic twists and jangly guitars, they nicely contrast the pessimism at the song’s centre with a swirling alt-rock sound, which not only adds an earworm melody, but also deepens the meaning of the track.

Everything After Midnight have clearly thought out what they want to get across through their latest single and have again shown that they can write a catchy and quality song, so definitely keep an eye on them.
