In her first single, dead flowers in the sun, Fran Wentworth introduces her delicate and heartfelt sound to the indie scene, as she explores the feelings that can often remain at the end of a relationship. Through stunning lyrics, she draws intimate parallels between love and nature, beautifully painting a picture of the changing of the seasons, to ultimately show that she is a natural songwriter who has the potential to grow into an influential artist in the future.

With words acting like putty in her hands, Wentworth’s debut is an incredibly visual and romantic song that highlights her skill in noticing all of life’s intimate details, as well as her ability to translate  these into a lyrical story: “A new sun / The same soul, no longer recognisable / The same seed, sprouted into what could have been love / If not diseased.”

Throughout the track, she sings with a soft delicacy that is a delight to the ear, mirroring her tender lyrics perfectly, whilst also adding a sadness to the gentle, pastoral tone of the song. Meanwhile, the unwavering picking pattern and audible guitar frets that accompany Wentworth throughout are reminiscent of the likes of Hozier, helping to emphasise the song’s atmospheric and intimate nature. dead flowers in the sun is a sincere and reflective debut that has quite the impact, despite its small sound.
