A month on from the announcement of their full-length debut, dance-rock four-piece Friedberg have unshackled the title track. Hardcore Workout Queen — with a video paying tribute to vibrant ‘80s fitness tapes — proves an effortlessly groovy, bass-led affair.

Though a more muted effort, perhaps, than the all-female act’s prior work – singles My Best Friend and The Greatest, which feature on the upcoming album – the new track is undeniably Friedberg, packed with the same dancefloor choruses, lo-fi melodies and signature indie guitar sound we’d expect from the group.

The song, explains frontwoman Anna Friedberg, is about “being champion of the slobs… the perfect song to listen to whether you’ve got a protein shake or a beer in your hand…”. There’s nothing untrue there; the title track of LP number one is a palpitating alt-rock track fit for any gym playlist – but it wouldn’t go down badly at a round of pre-drinks on a Saturday night. There’s a little Wet Leg in here, a little Other Stage, and a lot of fun. Friedberg’s debut album looks set to be a stormer.

Hardcore Workout Queen is out November 8th via Clouds Hill.
