Glenna Jane shares her diaristic debut ‘Late Bloomer’
The singer-songwriter’s first single is a hook filled pop-rock anthem for teens and twenty-somethings alike.
Through her debut single Late Bloomer, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Glenna Jane has introduced her anthemic pop-rock sound to the indie scene for the first time. Filled with dazzling melodies, tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a catchy chorus, the song stunningly explores the awkwardness and naivete of first times by capturing the discomfort of teenagehood, as well as the difficulty of navigating the so-called deadlines of growing up, in an extremely inviting way.
Her sound has a real element of nostalgia to it, as if she could write a song for any coming-of-age film and it would fit perfectly. The angst in the open guitar chords and in the crooning vocals create a gorgeous cathartic blend, while the lyrics have an unapologetically honest quality, which when combined allows Glenna to captivatingly explore the complex themes of intimacy, religion and attachment throughout the track: “You’re biting my ankles / I’m clutching a cross / I’m conditioned to want but never touch.”
She very much takes on the role of storyteller amongst Late Bloomer’s lush textures and electric guitar earworms, making it clear that her music is truly authentic at its core. And, with the song being intimately written, recorded and produced in a bedroom, Glenna has not only put a spotlight on her song-writing abilities very early in the game, but also convinced us that she is one to keep an eye on in the coming months.
Late Bloomer is out now.
