Right out of the cosmic stargate, NightbusAverage Boy gives major mid-80s gothic-wave vibes, and we are: Here. For. It. Mixing La Roux-esque vocals with dreamy synth melodies, the North-based trio have come out storming with one of the most esoteric tracks of the year so far.

Musically, Average Boy is somewhere between goth-pop and the avant-garde; it packs a guitar tone conjuring images of misty ribbons and gown-smothered muses floating in the void between worlds. All the while, its thumping backbeat ensures the tune stays a worthy piece of dance-pop. It’s enigmatic, to be sure, but there’s no doubt to be found in the mastery and nuance woven throughout. It’s summertime, early-evening bliss-pop for the weird and wonderful. Don’t believe the title, this one is anything but average.
