Life in the time of beans and beta particles: Paul Molloy’s Beatles-ish ‘Luxury Bunker’

Luxury Bunker is the lead single from The Coral guitarist Paul Molloy’s upcoming concept album, The Madmen of Apocalypso. A wry, Kinks-esque look into the atomic unknown, it’s an oddity to be sure.

With psychedelic, Beatles-y Magical Mystery Tour melodies and harmonies, barrelling into a cheery chorus about the apocalypse, Molloy’s latest is the eccentric’s dream. “He tuned the radio in/ and whilst he was listening/ ate his last piece of fruit/ from inside his hazmat suitsuch McCartney-esque reflections on a quaint life among the fallout and rubble are par for the course in this track. It’s like the odder second cousin of Bowie’s Starman – fusing all the best bits of early ‘70s glam together. I’m not sure Luxury Bunker will be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s bound to put the smile on the face of any lightning-faced Fermi out there.

The Madmen of Apocalypso is out September 6th via Spring Heeled Records. Pre-order here.
