Canadian indie-pop band Peach Pit have released the latest single from their upcoming third studio album, From 2 to 3. It is the successor to their successful second studio album You and All Your Friends. Accompanied by the simultaneous release of the song’s music video, Peach Pit have returned with an indie song that has a bit of a surf rock tinge.

Beginning with an electric guitar diddy that is soon joined by a dominant acoustic guitar and a drum that fits in just right, it’s known immediately that this is a laid back song. Its lyrics; nevertheless, are more on the depressing side. Dealing with loving someone who has what is presumed to be a cocaine addiction (“Even at the cocaine continental / Laughing at the way you cut your lines / Halving all of everybody’s bag / And bucking up the time”) and their lack of desire to be loved. It’s a romantic track in the sadder means, but its instrumental doesn’t make it out to be upon first listen.

It’s all too easy to become entranced with the guitars and lead singer Neil Smith’s vocals if you aren’t on the lookout for the deeper meaning. That isn’t a deterrent; however, given its clean and crisp sound that is ready for its place in your fall listening repertoire. The small remnants of surf rock guitar styles in the electric guitar riffs, the acoustic melody that supplements it with a classic indie sound, and the sonic space of it all sounds like a song that deserves to be in a movie. It has the lyrical depth to accomplish detailing modern tragedy wrapped in a happier sounding package and does so with a grace that only Peach Pit can pull off.

While it’s arguably more of a stripped-down track for the group, it’s by no means lacklustre. Indie-pop fans and general indie subgenre lovers alike are sure to find themselves attuned to Peach Pit’s newest effort and a feeling that’s just right. Whatever comes next in the album’s release cycle might be something similar or completely different; either way, they will deliver on producing some tasteful indie ear candy.
