With their latest track, Sad Boys Club tap into pleasant ‘90s nostalgia – it’ll grow on you

Sad Boys Club are a London-based band that have been described as emo-tinged indie rock. I’ve not heard of them before or indeed heard any of their music. However, with this track, Can’t Help Myself, I’ll admit I found myself getting drawn into its sweet, enchanting embrace.

It has late ‘90s/early 2000s quality to it – the sort of track you’d probably hear in a teen movie from that time, like American Pie. It would play at the moment when the lead guy had gotten his first setback with the manic pixie dream girl. He’d be wandering the streets, trying to figure out what he did wrong, gazing wistfully at the ocean or something.

Equally, for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans, this would be the sort of angsty, low key indie track Buffy and the gang would hear whilst they hung out at the Bronze. I could see Sad Boys Club playing there, probably in a scene where Buffy and Willow talk about boys or vampires. Or vampire boys.

This might sound like I’m being overly mean, but I loved American Pie growing up and I re-watched all seasons of Buffy recently.

But anyway... the song has a nice hook to it, and the lyrics are pleasant, to say the least. Writing this, I realise I’ve listened to the track four times now, and each time it’s grown on me. It does make me wonder if you didn’t grow up in the ‘90s, will this have the same effect on you? Perhaps not. Although I think any music fan would appreciate the warm and fuzzy nature of this sort of music. It’s comforting, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
