Sorry deliver sulky optimism with latest single ‘There’s So Many People That Want To Be Loved’

The North London Rockers urge us not to give up on the chance of finding that special someone just yet.

Sorry’s latest offering combines low-energy bedroom pop with their trademark genre-defying sound — a blend of 90s grunge, turn of the century post-Britpop and a hint of new wave pop. The minimalist intro — a pair of complementary but disconcerting guitars underpinning the delicately moany vocal — gives way to a chugging bass before the track opens up to its full glory. Understated riffs, tremolo keys, synths and horn accompaniments are all given adequate breathing space without ever dominating an addictive melody that won’t be out of your head any time soon. Less a wall of sound, more a beautifully crafted grunge-pop tune that makes you feel better about life.

The North Londoners never take themselves too seriously, yet there is so much heart in what they do. Lead singer Asha Lorenz’s lyrics are at once joyful and sorrowful — “There’s so many people that just want to be loved / But you’re the only pair of hands I can think of (that I’m thinkin’ of). It’s a call to optimism delivered by someone who’s lived their whole life as a pessimist.

For a somewhat experimental band who have been keeping us on our toes since their 2018 debut single Starstruck, this should probably count as their most accessible single to date. They might be refreshingly social-media snubbing and low-key, but this is unashamedly pop music. They have never been reticent to admit wanting to make it and, luckily for us, it’s of the highest order.
