The Roly Mo shook up the Scottish rock scene with their raw energy last year, and this year are shaking things up nationwide as they continue to break boundaries with their music and speedily rise up the rankings of rock.

The Glasgow four-piece captured fans last year with their exhilarating debut EP TRM and are continuing to deliver with their latest single being nothing short of outstanding.

Last year was undoubtedly a breakthrough year for The Roly Mo with their single Control Yourself picking up tremendous amounts of traction and support. The debut EP that shortly followed similarly received critical acclaim across the board so it is no wonder that this year the Glasgow rockers are back and doing it again as they gift fans with new music.

I Miss The Dancing is a track that tells the story of being stuck with your thoughts, reminiscing, and ultimately being alone — and is simply phenomenal.

The track’s introduction is full-on and throws listeners straight into a melange of electric guitar melodies. The choppy bass riff plays in sync with a rolling tom-tom drum and provides listeners with a steady, persistent groove that sits nicely on the off-beats. All the while, a picked electric guitar plays an emotional melody leading up to the entrance of the vocal.

As we exit the introduction at the eight-bar mark, we enter the verse with the sound of lead vocalist Joe Morton. The instrumentation of the verse sees a stripped-back, minimalist arrangement that allows Morton’s vocals to take centre stage.

The verse commences with a thumping kick drum played on every beat and a pleasantly simple bass riff, however, as the track progresses further, along with a crisp snare and ticking hi-hats, we get short harmonic indie-rock guitar chords that add a slight edge to the arrangement. Altogether, these elements work in harmony culminating in a rather uplifting track.

The chorus of I Miss The Dancing sees the track pick up-tempo and become more skippy as Lewis Jaoui (the band’s drummer) introduces an open hi-hat to the track, the picked electric guitar from the introduction also re-enters the track. At this point, every instrument in the arrangement is playing and it is truly thrilling. Before we know it, after being on a high, we are quickly grounded and back to the arrangement of the introduction which acts as a bridge to the next verse.

The lyricism and vocal ability shown by Morton on this latest release is truly incredible and completely unparalleled. His delivery is clear and, during the chorus, we get some fantastic harmonies. The lyrics of this latest release are interesting, to say the least, and the hook is undeniably catchy.

Overall, the Scotsmen have most definitely delivered with this latest single and, as The Roly Mo announce that they will be releasing their second EP How It’s Been this November, we can only wait in anticipation and pure excitement for what’s about to come.
