Winnipeg, MN takes listeners into an abyss of isolation on their new single ‘Beach’
‘Beach’ is the first single of Winnipeg, MN’s upcoming album of the same title
Winnipeg, MN’s sound can only be described by saying it should be listened to alone with no outside distractions. Their newest single Beach feels like a form of meditation, with ocean sounds running throughout the eight-minute abyss that they envelope you in.
A solo act based in London, Winnipeg, MN released their first album titled Love in Life and Death in 2019, followed by a five-track EP titled Bouzouki Songs in 2020.
The track lends itself to an experimental folk genre, with leading guitar tones throughout the song. The echoey guitar melody that Winnipeg, MN has arpeggiated gives the song an image of gentle waves as they rise and fall along a shore. It feels as if they paint an image using the tones from the guitar and bassline.
The vocals are virtually unintelligible with a very soft and hushed sound. Winnipeg, MN’s record label Eyeless Records say: “The lyrics reflect themes of isolation, longing and finding solace in hibernation.”
The track was written as part of the album that Winnipeg, MN composed in a six-day period of isolation in January 2021; the sound of Beach really reflects this. It has such an encompassing feel to it which encourages self-reflection and, inevitably, procrastination.
The album is undeniably unique (and may not be to everyone’s taste) but the feelings that Beach produces are beyond powerful. The whole theme of isolation and self-reflection is not something I’ve heard so evidently in a piece of music in recent years.
Beach is out on February 24th via Eyeless Records.
