Fontaines D.C.’s frontman Grian Chatten announces debut album ‘Chaos For The Fly’
The Irish frontman will release his debut solo project this summer.

Grian Chatten, member of the Irish post-punk band Fontaines D.C., will release his debut solo album this summer. His debut single, The Score, was released a week prior to his album announcement and is now followed up with sophomore single, Fairlies. Chaos For The Fly sits at nine tracks, and is produced by Speedy Wunderground founder Dan Carey.
Chatten’s solo project is not an offshoot of his band, but rather an independent body of its own. Born out of a late-night walk at Stoney Beach, the album came to him in waves, in a literal sense. The moment he looked out into the waves, the album was kickstarted. While the album is produced by Fontaines D.C.’s long-time collaborator Carey, it’s guitar driven as it explores the intimacy of being able to utilize the instrument to convey emotion. The project was meant to be independent of his band; creative control wasn’t something Chatten wanted to compromise on for the sake of another record with the group. It’s not indicative of any bad blood, but rather a healthy way of making music that is purely his own due to its personal nature and creative direction.
The latest single was written in Spain and Los Angeles prior to the Fontaines D.C. tour. “It was a quick write,” Chatten reflects, “and I believe I celebrated each line with a beer.” Considering the outcome, celebrating was understandable. His album is poetic in nature while, as he puts it, exaggerating aspects of his soul. The combination of his alluring, growly voice and the dancing guitar melody, Fairlies is an acoustic banger. And yes, there are hand claps that are as addicting as the drum line or post-bridge explosion. Fairlies’ music video was animated by Callum Scott-Dyson.
Reflective of life and emotions and considering his writing skills in Fontaines D.C., the new perspective of Chatten presented through his solo work is sure to be a keen listen if his two singles give any glimpse into his world. If lucky enough, perhaps one of the singles will make an appearance on the band’s touring route. Already looking to be an impactful summer, Chatten making his debut adds to it. The album isn’t all dark and gloomy, but it’s honest and vulnerable. Perhaps it’s exactly what he needs.
