Born in Cape Town, South Africa, and currently based in London, the alternative trio of HONEYMOAN is set to release their debut album later this year. The album succeeds their previous projects; EPs Body, Weirdo, and Palace. Lead single Shortcuts was released late last year. HONEYMOAN was formed in 2017 as a passion project turned serious endeavour for members Alison Rachel (vocals) and Skye MacInnes (guitar) and bassist Josh Berry.

Sorry Like You Mean It, the album’s namesake, was released in conjunction with the announcement. It was the final song written for the album and was based on a relationship Rachel had gone through. Explaining its contents, she details that, “The song explores the trials of loving someone who seems unwilling to change and has become so attached to suffering that it is almost pleasurable for them. The narrative touches on the eventual realization that without their desire to change nothing will… then taking responsibility for one’s own choices in the face of such a realization.”

Drawing the listener in with indie bass lines, Rachel’s delicate yet strong voice, airy guitar riffs and electronic sonics explode into a head-banging, anthemic roar. Perhaps a resemblance to the chaotic nature of the relationship it was inspired by, it’s a sure-fire hit. Every member shines in their own way via their performance in the song, making the trio sound as in tandem as ever. The song’s music video plays off of romantic elements, has a bit of line dancing, and just the right amount of chaos.

HONEYMOAN’s debut album will see them take on and expand their indie roots by mixing gritty pop-punk, psychedelic, and Afropop into their sound. With Rachel and MacInnes based in the UK and Berry remaining in South Africa, the distance plays little into what makes them so successful. After four years in the music sphere, the trio don’t show any signs of slowing down.

Sorry Like You Mean It will be released on September 29th via HONEYMOAN/Virgin Music UK LAS (P&D).
