Mitski announces her sixth album ‘Laurel Hell’ with the second single ‘The Only Heartbreaker’
After a triumphant surprise single, indie sensation Mitski returns with another single to coincide with the announcement of her sixth studio album
A few weeks ago, renowned ‘sad girl’ Mitski returned with a surprise single Working for the Knife and its accompanying music video. The announcement of a second single, The Only Heartbreaker, came with a few surprises of its own. The household indie name announced her sixth studio album entitled Laurel Hell. Written before the pandemic and finished during it, Mitski herself described the album as “a soundtrack for transformation”. Whatever the transformation may entail, there’s no doubt Mitksi will be raw and vulnerable when expressing it. Due out in February, it will be supported by her forthcoming 2022 tour.
The single itself is full of 80’s inspired instrumentation; from classic slapping drumlines, synth melodies, and groovy guitar backing — it’s straight from the recently adored era. The lyrics are reflective of someone who sees their partner as someone who can’t seem to do anything wrong; meanwhile, they see themselves as the only person in the pairing who is going to cause heartbreak. Despite the sadder lyrical content, The Only Heartbreaker is boasting and bright as it progresses. Mitski’s effortless vocal talents pair delightfully with the shiny composition. The song is straightforward; however, it doesn’t compromise anything by being such.
The two previews of Laurel Hell can only make the devoted Mitski listener excited for what is to come. She doesn’t compromise her signature methods of hitting the heart when utilizing fresher sounds, and the visuals that accompany it enhance the singles to a new level. Mitski is well known for her artistry for good reason, and The Only Heartbreaker shows that even in the glittery moments, it’s still gold, but not in the way you think.
