Leeds four-piece Cliché Cult certainly seem determined to make their presence known. Formed in the messy haze of lockdown, they quickly made quite a name for themselves; from playing those beloved small-time gigs, to quickly garnering the attention of the likes of Steve Lamacq and Radio X, to supporting the likes of The Big Pink and Geese. The times are changing for the band: both with taking on a new member of the band and with their new release, Veronica.

Veronica is by far Cliché Cults’ most developed and fleshed-out single yet. Certainly a change in sound from their previous more post-punk leaning releases, this track oozes with softer indie riffs and seems more confident in where it wants to take its beat and feeling. Vocalist Jimmy Sweeney’s voice is complimented so much in the track as it soothes its way into the song, and it follows the absolutely piercing guitar sounds of the chorus.

Veronica touches on a familiar feeling to us all: looking back in the past with a melancholy feeling of what once used to be, but is now gone. Going into this song, the more upbeat licks and beats may place a downhearted veil over the emotion of the song, but, by the powerful roar of the chorus, it’s all apparent what the song is about again.

Produced by Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard’s frontman Tom Rees, Cliché Cult have created a fantastic single in Veronica, and it is certainly worth your time. Things can only go up and up for the boys, especially with plans for a big season on the live circuit – I know I’ll certainly be seeing them this year.
