Alt-rockers snake eyes give us ‘90s nostalgia on ‘dig’
Thrashy guitar and steady drums: snake eyes’ new track references the past but pushes ahead to the future, in an upbeat way

I guess history repeats itself. Or what goes around comes around… something like that, at least. The reason I say that is listening to dig by snake eyes I found myself transported straight back to the late ‘90s and early 2000s. The arrangement of the track, the thrashy way they play the guitar, the unfussy drumming. Then there are the vocals. Honestly, I could’ve sworn someone had stuck me in a time machine.
But the ‘90s have been retro and cool for a while now, so that’s nothing new. And it’s no bad thing. I mean, let’s face it, that time period was a good twenty-five years ago, so why not bring it back and give it a new spin? Plus, you get a double whammy – younger music fans discover this sort of sound for maybe the first time, and millennial types like myself get to bathe in sweet and heady nostalgia. Two sets of fans for the price of one.
Yet dig is no one-off. I had a listen to another one called 20 bottles and the setup was pure Nirvana – or at least, I imagine they were heavily influenced by their sound. With dig at least, it doesn’t quite have the same bite, though that’s OK.
Another point of reference might be the band Ash, in particular their catchy track, Girl From Mars (have a listen to the 2020 remaster).
So, if somewhere between those two bands is your thing, then check out snake eyes’ latest track and see what you think. I’d wager you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
