The newest single from the Nottingham based post-punk outfit is a tale of frustration from navigating relationships, specifically at university, and explores the feelings of hopelessness and confusion that many of us will resonate with

With clear influence from bands such as Fontaines D.C. and shame, Safe Bet, the latest single from indie-rock quartet Cucamaras, is driven by brooding guitars; according to lead singer Josh Hart, the riff had originally been “penned for a darker, slower track”, but it “found a new lease of life” when paired with the past-paced drums and punchy vocals.

The lyrics encompass the despair and misery that can come with trying to work through complex social lives at uni, and how it can become isolating; the part where the vocalist sings of almost having a meltdown because their takeaway hasn’t arrived yet really sums up how the smallest of things can get to you when you’re feeling miserable. It’s not all dark though, as the story is told through a witty lens and leaves you feeling more energised than downcast.

It’s no surprise that Cucamaras have been catching the eyes (and ears) of publications such as DIY and Clash, and have been featured on radio stations such as BBC 6 Music and Radio X. Safe Bet proves that they’re worthy of the attention they’ve received so far and shows a lot of potential for what we can expect from the four-piece in the future. If you’re a fan of the current post-punk scene, this song is a must-listen!
