Wolf Alice reveal second single ‘Smile’ off the forthcoming album ‘Blue Weekend’

Ellie and Co. are set to release their highly-anticipated third album in the summer and, if this is what we’re getting so far, expect the top album of 2021

Fifteen seconds in and you already know this song is going to be, for lack of a better word, a ‘banger’. If you’re a fan of Wolf Alice’s heavier numbers, this is the track you’ve been waiting for. Showing off their knack for a great riff and passionately delivered lyrics, Smile is certainly a change from their first single and one that leaves you wondering what they will come out with next.

The lyrics on this track and the way they are delivered by frontwoman Ellie Rowsell, oozing with confidence and attitude, making you want to learn all the lyrics straight away so you too can sing along. My personal favourite lines that I’d pick out would be: “I am what I am and I’m good at it / and you don’t like me, well that isn’t fucking relevant”… That gives you an idea of the tone we’re talking about here.

Not to be overlooked, Theo Ellis (bassist) and Joff Oddie (lead guitar) have once again done a hell of a good job building up the wall of guitar noise, but the bass, in particular, gets a moment to shine later in the track before it picks up again and we get to enjoy all four of them bonding together to cause a ruckus.

With the release of their first two albums, Wolf Alice have already proved their ability to produce a collection of tracks that don’t just stick to one genre or style but rather take you on a musical roller coaster. Just from the first two singles off their forthcoming album Blue Weekend, they have masterfully switched it up from the haunting and emotionally loaded The Last Man on Earth and the fuzzy, guitar-heavy rock offering of Smile

Blue Weekend is out on 11th June via Dirty Hit, preorder on shiny marbly blue vinyl here.
