Working Men’s Club share surprise new track ‘X’ and announce UK headline tour

After the success of their debut album, the Yorkshire group live up to expectations with their latest single: a brilliant three-and-a-half minutes of their self-proclaimed “indie-cum-dance-cum-techno” sound

Ever since the release of their highly-anticipated and equally well-received self-titled debut album given to the world last year (undoubtedly one of my favourite records of 2020—and just so happens to have featured in the Editor’s top 10!), it was evident that Working Men’s Club have established themselves as one of the most exciting new bands to grace the scene in a while.

Made up of frontman Syd Minsky-Sargeant (vocals/guitar/drum machine/synth aka pretty much the whole music shop), Liam Ogburn (bass), Mairead O’Connor (keyboards/guitar/vocals), and Rob Graham (guitar/synth), the four-piece have gone from strength to strength over the last couple of years; with their new single X–released yesterday–showing the band have no plans of stopping any time soon.

A similar overall sound to their first body of work, it seems the band has no intention of dramatically altering their style; but I’m totally OK with that.

Opening with tight drums and synths dripped in bass before the addition of a looping, chorus-filled guitar riff, with Minsky-Sargeant’s trademark, almost spoken-word vocals, the song instantly sounds like the work of Working Men’s Club. Jumping between the busy choruses, more guitar-focused verses, and synth-filled interludes, the tune never gets boring. I’m honestly starting to think that it would be impossible for this band to release a bad song.

Alongside the track is a perfectly fitting music video, directed by Steve Hockett and shot in an ex-industrial fridge. It features strobe lights so please take necessary caution.

I’ve been to a few of Working Men’s Club gigs and, if you’ve never been to one, I would highly recommend it. X definitely feels like it’s going to translate well live and, since the band have just announced a UK tour for November, hopefully it won’t be long till the Yorkshire four-piece are back on stage and we’re back in touching-distance of one another.
