Following the success of their recent single So Much For Mole Catching, which was lauded by outlets including NME, KEXP, DIY and So Young, self professed ‘Orchestral Cult Rock’ six piece Flip Top Head strike again their ruminative new single I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old

Coming as the second glimpse into the band’s highly anticipated debut EP, Up Like A Weather Balloon, the new single features solo lead vocals from Bowie Bartlett, whose cadence effortlessly falls somewhere between spoken word and operatic, delivering witty, yet introspective, musings on the rush towards getting older, but realising the mundanity of it all when you finally get there.

Establishing its tone early on through morose trombone instrumentals, I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old is an ever growing delivery of catharsis, with skilled production from Theo Verney (English Teacher, Lime Garden). Featuring tight drums and playful bass licks, the evolution of the track is perfectly demonstrated through its light guitar melodies gradually shifting into punchy raucousness as it draws to a close. Even at its peak, with a full theatrical cacophony of instruments, Flip Top Head manage to reach a perfectly charged and vivacious post-rock climax, which refuses to breach into unsettling dissonance.

I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old addresses the childlike feelings of wanting to grow up — juxtaposed with elderly outcomes such as shaking hands and back pockets brimming with shopping bags”, the band explains. “When you’re young, you wish to be older; big enough to go on rides, old enough to stay up late and eat sweets whenever you like. I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old asks the question: at what point does one stop wishing to be older?”.

I Can’t Wait Until I’m Old is out now via Blitzcat Records, followed by the entire EP Up Like A Weather Balloon on November 15th.
